Greg Hargarten

Although he began painting and drawing at an early age, it was in 2005, when Greg Hargarten began to paint seriously. As a founding member of the “Men Who Paint” group, he has since painted across Canada and abroad. He is self taught as a painter, and influenced by the French Impressionists as well as Canada’s Tom Thomson, J. E. H. MacDonald, Arthur Lismer and A.J. Casson. Hargarten’s paintings are an expression of his perception of nature, rather than exact representations. Using strong deliberate strokes and bold colours, he paints a variety of subject matter, but is mostly recognized for his urban and traditional landscapes.Marsha Day of the Star-Phoenix writes “Greg Hargarten, brings a kind of cerebral vitality to the canvas, along with a fearlessness uncommon to the nascent years of a painter’s career. His fluid grasp of the medium and natural instinct to go to the heart of the matter (his heart), both nourishes and dramatizes the dappled northern woods light.”In 2013 he filmed, edited, and narrated “Halfway To Heaven,” a 30 minute documentary of the Men Who Paint’s expedition to the Yukon, which aired on Shaw Television. This led to the “Adventures in Painting” web series which follows Hargarten’s artistic journey and the expeditions of the Men Who Paint as they explore and paint at various remote regions. There are currently over sixty episodes of “Adventures in Painting.” Recent highlights include the acquisition of his works by the Kunstmuseum in Schwann Germany, Parks Canada Permanent Collection, as well as the Guy Rutter - Peoples Choice, and the Kayla Memorial Awards from the Mann Art Gallery in Prince Albert. Hargarten has exhibited in over 50 solo and group shows in Canada and abroad. His artwork is held in private, corporate and museum collections including The Kunstmuseum in Schwann Germany,  The OstseeSparkasse Rostock Permanent Collection, The Mann Gallery in Prince Albert, Ronald McDonald House Permanent Collection, and the Parks Canada Permanent Collection.
